Mike Portnoy lahir pada 20 April 1967 dan dibesarkan di Long Beach, New York, di mana minatnya pada musik dimulai pada usia dini. “Ayahku adalah seorang DJ musik rock n ‘roll, jadi saya selalu dikelilingi oleh musik terus-menerus. Saya punya banyak sekali koleksi ketika saya masih muda dan sangat menyukai The Beatles dan juga Kiss. Tidak heran kalau akhirnya saya akan menjadi seorang musisi. “

Meskipun Mike belajar sendiri cara memainkan drum, dia mengambil kelas-kelas teori musik di sekolah menengah. Selama masa itu ia mulai bermain di band-band lokal Intruder, Rising Power dan Inner Sanctum, di Band terakhir mike dan kawan – kawan merilis album mereka sendiri. Mike meninggalkan band setelah mendapat beasiswa di Musik Berklee College di Boston.

Mike merupakan seorang kolektor yang luar biasa, Mike memiliki ruang penyimpanan Dream Theater memorabilia termasuk bootlegs, poster, kliping dan segala sesuatu tentang band tersebut. Koleksi video klip yang sangat banyak termasuk film favorit tahun 2001, A Clockwork Orange, Jacob’s Ladder, The Wall, seluruh episode The Simpsons dan Video pertandingan tinju.

Mike mengatakan bahwa pengaruh terbesar adalah Rush, drummer dari Neil Peart dan almarhum Frank Zappa. Drumer favorit lainnya termasuk Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Colaiuta, Simon Philips, John Bonham dan Keith Moon dan band-band seperti The Beatles, Queen, Yes, Metallica, Jellyfish, Iron Maiden, U2 dan Jane’s Addiction.
